A new study shows that adequate sleep is essential for organ repair, brain development, muscle growth and repair and growth of new brain cells leading to learning new information, relating to names, dates, faces and specific events,  in short, forming memory.

Lack of sleep has been shown to also increase ghrelin the hormone advising the brain that one is hungry. Conversely, less than six hours of sleep causes a drop in the fat burning hormone leptin that signals when an individual is full.
